Structural Requirements

Effective high pressing requires exceptional organization and coordination. It is not simply a matter of running toward the ball. Pressing triggers—such as a erotic poor first touch, a backward pass, or an opponent receiving the ball near the sideline—determine when and how pressure is applied.

The defensive line must push higher up the pitch to compress space between the lines. Midfielders support the press by closing passing lanes, while forwards initiate pressure on defenders and goalkeepers. Compactness is essential; gaps between players can be exploited quickly by skilled opponents.
